“Free Guy” movie review [spoiler-free]

This Movie Review is my personal opinion. I realize that everyone has unique preferences and sensitivities that may or may not align with mine and how we raise our highly impressionable daughter. My intent for my spoiler-free movie reviews is to help you make the best decision whether your young-at-heart family would enjoy or appreciate movies with ‘on the cusp’ dialogue and themes.

“Free Guy” is one of our recent favorite summer movies. You will enjoy it too, especially if you like Ryan Reynolds and his particular style of witty humor and action (“Hitman’s Bodyguard”, “Deadpool”). Make it a great day by adding ‘Free Guy’ to your movie collection.

20th Century Studios’ action-comedy “Free Guy” can be found on all major digital platforms and will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 12. You can now enjoy never-before-seen bonus material including two deleted scenes, an extended scene, bloopers and making-of featurettes. The talented cast holds their own with Reynolds: Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Lil Rel Howery (“Get Out”), Joe Keery (“Stranger Things”), Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Brittany Runs a Marathon”) and Taika Waitiki (“Jojo Rabbit”), among fun cameos.

One day, Bank Teller/Ryan Reynolds is shocked to discover that he is actually a background player with an international online video game world! He decides to become the hero of his own story, and rewrites himself. Now, in a world where there are no limits, a Bank Teller is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way … before it is too late.

According to Stella Review: My family had a great time with this movie, especially since we are a family of gamers. Video gamers. The humor, characters and story kept us grinning and intrigued throughout the movie. We did not want the adventure to end. Those who are not as familiar with video games (and YouTubers) would still enjoy the action-adventure roller coaster.

According to Stella Rating: Family Viewing Disclaimer (1/low – 5/high scale)
“Free Guy” is rated PG-13 by the MPAA due to the sequences of “strong fantasy violence throughout, language and crude/suggestive references.” Scenes include some kissing and suggestive references, with many scenes of video game violence that do not include blood or gore. There are also a few fight scenes that end with bloody wounds. Several scenes refer to numerous characters being killed. There are at least 2 F-words as well as other strong language. I give “Free Guy” a HIGH PG-13 rating of:

  • 1 – SEX/NUDITY
  • 4 – VIOLENCE/GORE
  • 3 – PROFANITY
