PUG Log Day 7
Today while looking for an adventure I had some extra time, so decided to take a risk. I found some others wanting to deal with the master level Demon Spider Queen, one of the epic dungeons. The epic dungeons are a great risk because there are only five of us, so anyone not able to keep up increases the danger of failure that much more. Because of this, I had been avoiding epic dungeons…due to most of them ending up in failure with a great deal of time lost. This one started out poorly as only four of us entered the dungeon, with no clue where the fifth guy ended up. On the bright side I saw we didn’t lose the healer, a well-dressed drow that went with a Cult of the Dragon Tunic and Waterdhaven Garb to create a really sharp look. An outfit functional for battling Demon Spider Queens or simply going to a formal party hosted by Lord Neverember. Both pieces of the outfit had what looked like Shadow Grove as their primary color dye, likely Inkwell as the second dye, and possibly Rough Iron as the third dye. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab details on the head piece, but I think an outfit like this really doesn’t need one.
As we start moving through the dungeon, I notice that one of the dps is close combat. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to understand to avoid the red areas or to watch for close range multi-target attacks…I quickly lose count on how many times he dies. The other dps is ranged, so tends to survive longer, but the combined damage output is not promising as even the drow and spider guards prove a challenge. We make it to the first boss, and I do my best to pull aggro but the close range dps doesn’t back away from boss and dies from the AoE attacks…sadly neither I nor the healer were surprised. Then, when the reinforcements show up, just one of them takes out the ranged dps. Even with all of that going wrong, the healer knows enough to stay alive and the two of us manage to defeat the first boss…in a very…very…very…very long boss fight as I’m now both tank and dps. By the time we reach the second boss fight the ranged dps has wised up and does a better job letting me take the heat. The healer is excellent, keeping us alive, and specifically, myself, alive. The close range dps has not wised up yet and dies about as fast as a goblin trying to take on an ogre. At least I’m getting a heck of a lot of practice tanking under extreme situations, so this isn’t a waste of time, but I’m pretty sure we don’t have the damage output for the final fight with the Demon Queen. We make it to the Demon Queen herself and we actually do enough damage…after a very long fight… to get her to transform. The close ranged dps has wised up by this point as well, which is the only reason we managed to force the transformation. An important note, at this point in the fight with the Demon Queen, if the reinforcements get into the webbed areas they heal the Demon Queen. Ultimately, the reinforcements the Demon Queen summons and her transformed state combined overwhelm us. Unfortunately, due to time I had to return back to Protector’s Enclave, but based on how the first attempt went there was near zero chance we were going to defeat the Demon Queen. Pretty sure it will be a long while before I try one of these epic dungeons with a PUG…unless I feel the need to hone my tanking skills.
