In spite of all our doubt about another remake of another beloved movie, we had a great time at the new Live-Action Disney “Aladdin”! My husband, teenage daughter and I had all the original fun feels from the 1992 animated movie, with the added ‘fresh Will Smith effect’ to his version of the magical Genie.
The original Disney-animated “Aladdin” (1992) holds a significant piece of my heart. I adore every beat of the movie and music that I memorized by wearing out my VHS and Movie Soundtrack cassette tape. Of course, back then they were quickly replaced with a CD and DVD. Didn’t EVERYONE want a friend like Robin William’s Genie and dream of silly, romantic moments with quick-witted and charming Aladdin?
In this 2019 version, director Guy Ritchie adds his flair of high-energy to the children’s musically-framed adventure story, while street-smart Will Smith peppers ‘Genie’ with his personal charm.

Will Smith respectfully takes on the Genie role without any attempt at Robin Williams impersonations or duplication. This sassy Genie is fun to watch, as he guides Aladdin towards his heart’s desire.

The city of Agrabah comes alive, while we revisit some of our favorite characters and sing along to familiar Disney movie and Broadway tunes.

According to Stella Rating: Family Viewing Disclaimer (1/low – 5/high scale)
“Aladdin” is appropriately rated PG. The MPAA rating has been assigned for “some action and peril”. These sequences include: the spooky Cave of Wonders, scary pterodactyl-type bird of prey chase, several cleavage and abdomen revealing outfits, a large shirtless genie, a man seen stealing, magical beings, several falls (without injury), and some name-calling. Therefore, I give “Aladdin” the following rating:
- 1 – SEX/NUDITY
- 2 – VIOLENCE/GORE
- 1 – PROFANITY
