I grew up with an emotional connection to the classic 1941 Disney animated movie DUMBO. The bleak story-line for Dumbo’s mother, Jumbo, and abandoned baby Dumbo had parked itself on my heart all these years. Then, several months ago the trailer for this latest live-action adaptation emerged, I struggled to watch more than a few minutes. The images that EDWARD SCISSORHANDS director Tim Burton produced are surreal and incredible. He successfully brought the heartfelt story of Dumbo to life!
In spite of my emotional hesitation and initial skepticism of any re-make, I found myself very impressed with the new live-action DUMBO movie! Burton was able to depict every look and sense of the grubby, dilapidated carni-family circus life in the early 1900s. I especially liked the familiar rusty detail of ole reliable ‘Casey Jr’ train.
You will appreciate DUMBO, if you enjoyed the other Disney live-action movies like Jon Favreau’s THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016) and CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (2018) with Ewan McGregor. Similar to these other darkly-framed children’s stories, you will quickly forget that the main animal characters are CGI.

I decided to give this movie a chance, primarily due to the cast and crew, who are some of my favorite:
According to Stella Rating: Family Viewing Disclaimer (1/low – 5/high scale)
DUMBO is rated PG, and I would place it as a high-PG, due to the MPAA rating that has been assigned for “peril/action, some thematic elements, and brief suggestive language”.
Scenes include: cleavage-revealing circus costumes, a circus tent collapsing fatally onto a horrible man, risky circus tricks, performers falling from a significant height, intense fire, and wild animals kept in cages and shackled. Therefore, I give DUMBO the following rating:
- 1 – SEX/NUDITY
- 3 – VIOLENCE/GORE
- 1 – PROFANITY
