Mary Poppins Returns: Family Review [Spoiler-Free] + Bonus Activity Pages

The wait is over! MARY POPPINS RETURNS is now playing in theaters everywhere! My husband, 14-year old daughter and I watched the highly-anticipated Disney musical feature film, so without further ado, here is our split reviews with bonus Coloring Sheets and Activity Pages. This appropriately PG-rated movie is family-friendly, but contains themes of magic, death of a loved one, rights of workers, greed, sabotage, bill collectors, confusion, logic, intellect, imagination, aging, change, judging a book by its cover, Leo Tolstoy, lies, joy and wonder.

Stella’s Thoughts: I grew up watching and memorizing the entire soundtrack to one of Disney’s most popular life-action films: MARY POPPINS (1964). With those songs and characters in my heart, I was protective and skeptical when the first news began to emerge about MARY POPPINS RETURNS. Immediately, I was concerned that it would be a potentially disastrous re-boot, and thus be disappointing and heartbreaking to my cherished story.

Then, as more information was revealed, my initial concern melted into hopeful curiosity. The strong, competent and talented cast and crew involved in this project, increased my confidence and excitement: Director Rob Marshall/CHICAGO; Emily Blunt/EDGE OF TOMORROW, DEVIL WEARS PRADA; Lin-Manuel Miranda/MOANA, HAMILTON; Ben Whishaw/SPECTRE; Emily Mortimer/LOVELY & AMAZING; Julie Walters/MAMA MIA; Colin Firth/THE KING’S SPEECH, LOVE ACTUALLY; Meryl Streep/endless list (THE IRON LADY, JULIE & JULIA, DOUBT, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, HEARTBURN, SILKWOOD, KRAMER VS. KRAMER, SOPHIE’S CHOICE!)

Ultimately, as I watched this musical, Disney magic lit up the screen and I was transported back to the world of Cherry Tree Lane, London and Mary Poppins. MARY POPPINS RETURN is a delightful sequel which felt like a nostalgic trip with dear friends. The scenes, characters, story and setting all have the same flavor as the original, without repeating the exact same songs or story-line. My daughter and I were swaying and tapping along with the music and soundtrack.

I also loved seeing the grown-up children, and adored the several nods and nuggets referring back to the original. I will be pulling out my copy of the 1964 movie to watch again with my daughter over the holiday.

Veronica’s Thoughts: My daughter, Veronica, had a great time with MARY POPPINS RETURNS! She enjoyed experiencing the story unfold with some predictability and some surprises. As a 14-year old, she can still enjoy the children’s adventure, while she simultaneously sympathizes and rides the emotional journey with the adults as well.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS captivated and entertained Veronica from the first twinkle to the final beats of the credit scrawl.

Dudley’s Thoughts: My husband, Dudley, did not like the movie at all. He thought it was a poor attempt to recreate and mimic the original. The scenes felt identical with too much effort to copy MARY POPPINS. He squirmed throughout the entire movie and could not wait to leave…
