Movie Review: Goosebumps

October 21, 2015 by Stella

Spread the love

My 10-year old daughter and I had a great time at the movie: Goosebumps.
We hoped it would be a fun movie for us.

Check out our: Pre-Movie Review, Trailer and Activities

This movie was my daughter’s scariest so far. It was live-action, and she is more used to animated features. She is kinda freaked out now – and will be spending the night in the living room, with a few lights on.

Synopsis:

A teenage boy (Dylan Minnette) and his mother move from New York City to a small town.  He quickly discovers his pretty next-door neighbor and meets her unusual father (Jack Black).  Soon he realizes that the quirky neighbor is the famous author of the “Goosebumps” series and also an eccentric man tormented by his own imagination. When boy accidently releases creatures from the stories that are physically imprisoned inside locked manuscripts, the unsuspecting town becomes invaded by every horrible character imaginable.  Can he save them from all our worst nightmares???

Here is Veronica’s review:

Although it was rated PG, Goosebumps is a kids-level horror movie.
The character of ‘Slappy’ reminded me of the Crypt Keeper (from HBO’s “Tales from the Crypt”).
The teenage kids reminded me of Buffy’s sidekicks in the Vampire Slayer TV episodes.

I would not have picked this movie for myself. It is definitely more of a fun family flick – like “The Monster Squad”.
I enjoyed “Goosebumps” with my daughter, because it was our experience together.

Family Viewing Disclaimer (1/low – 5/high scale):

Some of the dialog and innuendo was pushing the PG label, but I would have been able to explain those concepts to our 10-year old if she latched onto them. Apart from that, I kept a close eye on her during the movie – just in case things got too scary.
I even jumped a few times and got freaked out by a scary set of surprise fangs!

1 – NUDITY/SEX – A few kisses. Very mild to nil comments that most kids would ignore.

3 – VIOLENCE – All the monsters are SCARY and very detailed for a kid’s movie. The werewolf has serious fangs and drool. The ventriloquist dummy is CREEPY. The psycho clown is INTENSE. If your kid can handle Jurassic Park, they can handle this movie.

1 – PROFANITY – 1 scatological term, 2 anatomical terms, 3 mild obscenities, name-calling (insane, silly, psychopath, scaredy-cat, chump, stupid, dummy, stupid dummy, idiot), exclamations (shut-up, jeesh, aw shucks, oh my goodness, oh my gosh, shut your mouth), 10 religious exclamations (e.g. Oh My God, Oh God, My God, God, Thank God).

If you liked Jumanji, you will enjoy Goosebumps.
If you liked Inkheart, you will enjoy Goosebumps.

Looking forward to your thoughts.
