I grew up in the late 70s-early 80s, watching a lot of TV. One of my favorites shows was The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1958-1982).
That cartoon introduced me to the suspenseful serial concept of THE CLIFFHANGER moment at the end of each episode. The exciting, hilarious (and somewhat educational) show also introduced several other characters who I enjoyed watching as well.
Mr. Peabody and Sherman were my favorite.
Sherman was about my age and naïve, so I could relate with his questions and theories. Mr. Peabody always took him on adventures, and was silly with his stale jokes. I never missed an episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle and watched all the off-spring shows as well:
Underdog and Tennessee Tuxedo
Then, decades later, I became a parent and I was shocked to see Mr. Peabody and Sherman return in a movie.
The Rocky and Bullwinkle Movie, and other movie reboot attempts failed… so I was surprised to see this emerge.
Skeptically hopeful, I watched this movie with my family…. and we loved it! Now, my 10-year old daughter gets to enjoy the updated 2014 version of the characters. I love introducing my childhood favorite things to my daughter. It is one of the things in life I always dreamed of.
Now, Mr. Peabody and Sherman have become a Netflix-exclusive series.
See my review here: Happy Peabody and Sherman Day!
I was extra excited to join my daughter and have a marathon of episodes whenever we could.
Then, by the third episode… I started to get disappointed. I am not sure I like the series anymore:
- the characters look more like crazy Ren&Stimpy (sharp fangs and ugly facial expressions)
- maybe I have ‘grown up’ and don’t appreciate that humor anymore?
- Sherman’s behavior has turned from simple boy mischief into rotten/trouble (like Bart Simpson). Is that what kids relate to now?
Such a sad commentary on generational/societal changes…
I will keep my childhood memories of my beloved characters and let my daughter enjoy the 2015 version. I am just glad that she understands when insanity erupts and can walk away without being negatively influenced.
